Right at the end of the pretty Galerie Vivienne, opposite the Richelieu Library, what strikes you first about Daroco is the extraordinary space this restaurant occupies. The open, two-story dining area with long lights and a mirrored ceiling must be one of the most stunning modern restaurant settings in Paris.

Once Jean-Paul Gaultier’s flagship store, this trendy spot is now filled with wicker chairs and green marble table tops. The exposed brick walls, floor-to-ceiling sheer glass entrance, and wrought-iron balustraded mezzanine are all très chic, and the staff are all welcoming and terribly good-looking (maybe Gaultier’s models?).

And then there’s the food. However much you might think, ‘When in Paris, eat French,’ forget that for a moment and eat some comfort food à l’italienne.

It starts, not surprisingly, with the starters, which range from charcuterie to olives and cheeses. Although they’re good, it’s wisest to save yourself for the mains. Order the pizza. Just trust me on that.

If you’re keen on truffles and have a budget of 38€ or 48€ to indulge in their black or white truffle pizza according to what’s in season, then go for it. It’s truly yummy. But the other pizzas are really good too and only priced up to 18€, so don’t worry. There’s also plenty of pasta to choose from — I had the pappardelle with wild boar ragout, so good!

Great desserts (did you say tiramisu?!) round out the tummy, oops, menu, and Daroco serves Lavazza coffee, so it’s a meal well finished.

And with the location being what it is, you can then work off some of the pizza calories with a stroll through the nearby Palais Royal. If you’re going on the weekend, it’s wise to book ahead on their website.
