In which city would you picture a 7000 sq ft (650 sq m) warehouse turned into a shabby chic bar, filled with exotic plants and vintage furniture? Probably in Berlin, maybe in Brooklyn, but certainly not in Paris! The Comptoir Général is truly an exception in a city where bars and restaurants are either pricey and super chic or crowded with smoke-filled terraces.
Whether you’re up for a cocktail with friends or a Sunday brunch with family, this is definitely one of the coolest places in the Paris!
The décor makes you feel like you’re on a sea-side holiday: the entrance looks like an old-fashioned hotel; the main room a fantasized version of the Caribbeans; on the patio, you’re transported to a typical Mediterranean village square; and you step into a kitschy Hollywood villa from the 50’s as you approach the bar.
The goal of Aurélien Laffon, the man behind the concept, was to create a place “to escape and dream.” And it’s quite a success!
During the day, you can go there to get a comforting café crème and take a few Instagram pictures. At night, The Comptoir Général is perfect for an apéro or a last drink before you go back to your hotel (or party all night!).
On Sundays, it’s all about the family-friendly brunch. The Comptoir’s team even organizes workshops for kids so that parents can enjoy their Secousse (the signature cocktail, which recipe includes hibiscus flower, maracuja and vodka) in peace.
One last tip before you run to le Comptoir: the place can be quite hard to find! This gem is tucked away in the back of a courtyard. After 7 pm you may spot a more or less intimidating line in front of the dark green gate, but during the day simply look for the graffiti-covered wall in between two typical Parisian buildings, that’s where it’s hidden!
