Café Varenne is a neighborhood staple that you’ll want to return to time and time again, even if it isn’t in your neighborhood. It feels like a Paris of long ago thanks in large part to the homemade food, friendly service, and classic Parisian décor.

The restaurant is filled with life and energy, and waiters dressed in black and white who seem to always have smiles on their faces.

Everything fits together, from the frosted light fixtures and crown molding to the tiled floors, without forgetting the red banquettes, dark woods, and walls covered with vintage signs and posters. Be sure to take an extra look at the bar filled with a beautiful collection of bottles – it’s just Paris.

Thanks to the excellent food, atmosphere, and service, you’ll find the terrace crowded rain or shine, in the heat of summer or during the coldest winter months. Owners, husband and wife team Sylvain and Agnès Didier, do a wonderful job making everyone feel welcome at Café Varenne.

The menu changes slightly twice a year to feature seasonal dishes. In the winter, we love the onion soup that comes with an entire bowl of cheese. In the warmer months, there’s nothing better than the cold ratatouille with a poached egg and a glass of ice-cold rosé.

No matter the season, you’ll always find French bistro classics like duck confit and roasted chicken that come with a heaping side of hand-cut, homemade fries. One of Café Varenne’s greatest strengths is taking a simple dish like oeufs mayonnaise and making them truly outstanding.

Café Varenne is a great place to start the day with a strong coffee. We also love it for lunch – no matter how crowded it is, the wait never seems to be more than five or ten minutes. They have an excellent selection of wine, which we recommend enjoying en terrasse. It really is a great Left Bank spot to have on your Paris list.
