Perched directly across from, and at eye-level with, the Metro Barbès Rochechouart, Brasserie Barbès is a welcome respite from this otherwise gritty Paris neighborhood.
It’s almost ironic even to find such an elegant eatery in the midst of a busy intersection lined with unlicensed street vendors and a noisy atmosphere, but there it is — four stories of it.
Tall windows decorate the façade, letting in lots of light but little sound. All the outer chaos is non-existent once inside. The first two levels of the brasserie are dotted with numerous dining tables to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner, whether alone or with a large group.
Their menu ranges from reinvented French gourmet favorites like beef tartare to vegan options like fried polenta.
Upstairs, a cozy bar plays a wide variety of music ranging from disco to house, with attractive young bartenders serving potent cocktails and welcoming conversation.
Out on the rooftop, you can dance all night or just take in the views of the Parisian skyline.
The industrial décor and hip ambiance make Brasserie Barbès the perfect after-work hangout, but it’s great for a nice dinner with family too. I recommend sitting on the second floor of the restaurant (or first-floor in France!) for the views and open-air feel; it’s definitely a good place to take a breather after a long day!
