Musée d’Orsay

If I had to pick my top three favorite places in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay would easily make the list. Not just for its collections — though those are astonishing — but for the sheer elegance of the building and the atmosphere it creates.

Housed in what was once a Beaux-Arts railway station, the museum is a triumph of transformation. Walking inside, you still feel the grandeur of its former life: the vast glass roof, the soaring iron arches, the golden clock presiding over the central hall.

It’s a space that makes you slow down, breathe, and take it all in.

Paris is full of beautiful museums, but few combine such architectural drama with such intimacy.

Most visitors come for the Impressionists, and rightly so. The collection is dazzling — Monet, Manet, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh — each gallery filled with works you’ve seen a hundred times in books, now shimmering in their original light.

And then, of course, there’s the setting. Perched on the Left Bank of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries and just steps from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the museum offers some of the best views in Paris. From the upper terraces you can see the city unfold — up toward Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, across to the Louvre, over the river’s shifting blues and greys.

And don’t miss slipping behind the giant clock faces on the fifth floor: through their glass, Paris feels like a living postcard.

What I love about the Musée d’Orsay is how it balances grandeur and intimacy, history and modernity. It’s a place where you can lose yourself for an entire day, or simply stop in for an hour, and always come away inspired.

For me, it’s the combination — the beauty of the building, the richness of the collection, and the unbeatable location — that makes it one of the essential Paris experiences.
