Fans of seafood won’t want to miss La Cagouille, a top Paris restaurant celebrated for its fresh fish and shellfish dishes prepared with precision and care. At just a 5-minute walk from the Montparnasse station, this understated eatery doesn’t rely on extravagant decor or trendy gimmicks — it lets the food do all the talking.

When my friends and I arrived, we were admittedly unimpressed by the unassuming exterior of this Montparnasse restaurant. The terrace, simple and functional, at the foot of a modern building, lacked that classic Parisian flair you might expect from a place with such a reputation.

But within minutes of sitting down, the warmth of the service and the promise of an exceptional meal started to change our perspective.

The menu is a seafood lover’s dream, featuring impeccably fresh fish, crabs and oysters, and delicacies rarely found elsewhere in Paris. Would its proximity to the Gare Montparnasse, with inbound trains from Brittany and the Atlantic Ocean, explain the remarkable freshness of the seafood?

We started with a plate of warm whelks and clams, plus a generous serving of razor clams in olive oil — both bursting with flavor and an excellent prelude to what was to come.

Then came the star of the evening: perfectly cooked ‘Saint Pierre’, served with a delicate buttery sauce that elevated the dish without overpowering the fish’s natural taste. Another standout was the grilled red snappers, their skin crisped to perfection, and so fresh it needed nothing more than a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of salt.

Throughout the meal, the staff was attentive yet unintrusive, happy to recommend the best wine pairings for our choices. Their enthusiasm for the cuisine was palpable, reinforcing the sense that we were in the hands of true seafood aficionados.

By the end of the evening, any initial doubts we had had about La Cagouille had vanished. It’s not a place that tries to impress with appearances, but rather with an unwavering commitment to top-quality seafood, expertly prepared.
