You know that you’ve arrived in your neighborhood when you sit down on a terrace and the waiter simply brings you your favorite drink asking you a single question.

MÔM on Rue Pierre Demours in the 17th Arrondissement is my local go-to place for after-work drinks or to welcome in the weekend. While it’s a restaurant with a bar and terrace, it’s the terrace that I love most.

Small, cozy, and always busy, here you can sit and watch the world go by, watch people greet each other and stop in the middle of the pavement to gossip, people rushing home, or off out somewhere nice.

And, despite recent laws which forbid outdoor heating on terraces, MÔM seems to be an exception, because technically, the terrace is part of the building, closable with a roof, and so, they still have heaters that keep you warm even in winter.

The restaurant is made up of tables opposite the long bar, with one extra separate room usually occupied by private parties. It serves a selection of French and European favorites, from filet de boeuf and grilled salmon, to salads and Saint-Jacques.

And the food is great. But honestly, I’m here to recommend the cocktails and what’s called tapas on the menu. Mais attention! These aren’t really your traditional tapas at all; instead, they’re typically French snacks that go so well with a nice drink.

Seriously, with your Aperol Spritz or your coupe de Champagne, I recommend you forgo a proper dinner and simply order these small(ish) sharing plates.

The croque monsieur is one of the best I have ever eaten in Paris, and it is huge, on a large slice of artisanal bread, dripping with cheese. Even better? You can add truffle ham to the order, making it a perfect meal in my mind.

Or have the planche mixte with charcuterie and cheese, and lots of fresh baguette. The various hams, salamis and pates are enough for a ‘starter’ and you can leave the cheese to eat at the end.

The moules farcies are great, as is the mixed mezze, called Assiette Kernia on the menu, offering houmous, tapenade, and tzatziki.

To have drinks with any of these savory sharing plates is such an excellent choice for an apéritif, that I’ve spent many evenings filling up on the small dishes at MÔM rather than eating a true meal. They’re available between 17h and 21h, perfect Parisian apéro time.
