It’d been quite some time since I’d wandered around the Marché Saint Germain, and I must say I was positively impressed by the change. The Marché itself returned to its original purpose, with food stalls and artisan stands replacing the clothes shops in the covered market.

Nice bistros have settled here too — including the Avant Comptoir du Marché, a bistronomic wine and tapas bar by Yves Camdeborde, that I’ll soon tell you about! — bringing new blood to the already remarkable food scene in the neighborhood.

In the bordering Lobineau street, behind a discreet dark façade, the Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels welcomes you for a journey through a land of “super-natural wines,” pun intended. Intended to pique your curiosity and taste buds.

Inside, the natural wine bar’s elegant décor, dim lights, velvet sofas, and low tables create a secluded and intimate atmosphere. Their wine list boasts more than 600 entries from all regions and terroirs, but no worries, their sommeliers are always keen to help you choose.

To go with your glass of wine, their excellent tapas-like small plates, mostly Italian and Spanish delicatessen dishes, are just the perfect match. A little pricey, but what a great way to start an evening!

La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels belongs to the Experimental Group, known for its chic and trendy cocktail speakeasies in Paris — the Prescription Cocktail Club and Experimental Cocktail Club, among others.

And if you aren’t lucky enough to be able to visit one of their Parisian spots, the group recently opened two outposts of its Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, one in the Little Italy neighborhood of New York City, and another in Covent Garden in London.
