Hidden away in the 8th Arrondissement, just off Boulevard Haussmann, this beautiful neoclassical chapel has an incredible history tied to the French Revolution.
The chapel was built to honor King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette, who were executed during the Revolution.
As you arrive, the lovely Square Louis XVI surrounds the chapel with gardens, creating a quiet and calming atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to step away from the busier parts of the city.
Inside, the space is simple but powerful. The soft light adds to the calm feeling, and the altar marks the spot where the remains of the king and queen were once buried. Sculptures and memorials throughout the chapel tell the story of the royal family and others who lost their lives during that turbulent time.
The chapel itself, designed by Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine, is a masterpiece of neoclassical style. Its clean, elegant lines make it a place that encourages reflection.
Even if you aren’t a history enthusiast, the beauty and peacefulness of the place make it a memorable stop, especially in spring or summer when the garden is in full bloom.
