Surely on every shopper’s list when visiting Paris, the flagship store of Les Galeries Lafayette on Boulevard Haussmann is a must-see, even for those who aren’t particularly interested in fashion or luxury brands.
The exterior of this classic Parisian department store is impressive, but inside it’s absolutely extraordinary. Under a jaw-dropping stained-glass dome, eight levels of designer clothing, cosmetics, and housewares tempt you at every turn. Between the beautiful items for sale and the art deco architecture, it’s a true feast for the eyes!
And not just for the eyes. The Galeries Lafayette is also home to more than 15 different dining options, with menus ranging from homemade hamburgers to caviar. You’ll also find a few bars on-site should you need to ease the pain of your purchases or toast your great finds. With everything you’ll ever need right inside the department store, it’s a great place to go when it rains in Paris– you can easily spend all day here without setting foot outside!
If it’s a nice day though, go up to the seventh-floor rooftop terrace. Overlooking the Haussmannian buildings of Paris, you’ll get an up-close view of the Opéra Garnier and see the Eiffel Tower too. In summer, there’s also a bar and restaurant on the rooftop so you can enjoy the view with a glass of wine in hand or along with a good meal. The terrace is free to visit and is open from 9:30am – 7:30pm.
And in the winter, be sure to go see their Christmas decorations! Every year, the store partners with brands and designers to create beautiful Christmas window displays and hang dazzling decorations inside under the dome.
Wondering where else to see the city sparkle come Christmastime? These places have the best holiday decorations in Paris.
For the true fashionistas that aren’t there for the views or the food, the Galeries Lafayette also puts on weekly fashion shows. March to December, models hit the runway every Friday at 3pm, with a second show on Mondays from May through September. You’ll need a ticket (13.90€ for adults) to attend one of the 30-minute défilés de mode, so be sure to reserve your spot on the Galeries Lafayette website.
Urbansider Tip: As a tourist favorite, Galeries Lafayette Haussmann can get very crowded. Go during the week before noon or after 6pm to avoid literal busloads of shoppers.
