Simply called ‘bus shelter’ en français, the Abribus Café is just that, a shelter. Next to the Père Lachaise cemetery, this is a café where you can sit all morning or afternoon reading a book (or indeed writing one), lingering over the excellent coffee (Lavazza) or the even better hot chocolate — it made our list for the best hot chocolates in Paris.

People will leave you be, but they might nudge you come lunchtime when the crowds pour in from nearby offices.

Around 1 pm is when it gets bustling, with people enjoying the specials of the day, platters of charcuterie, scrumptious burgers, or the café’s famous couscous.

Under the rather interesting ceiling décor of odd lights and strange drop-shaped protuberances, the eclectic mix of tables and chairs, settees, and banquettes are filled with a mix of people that reflect the area’s cosmopolitan and colorful background. After a dessert of tiramisu or cheesecake, the restaurant empties again and slips back into the laid-back quiet place where you can sit in a corner and relax.

Abribus Cafe
L’abribus is the perfect place for a pick-me-up after visiting Père Lachaise.

From 5-9 pm it’s Happy Hour at L’Abribus and that’s when the pretty little corner bar comes into its own. A myriad of cocktails (look out for those with the stars, they’re the Happy Hour specials), along with a good selection of beer and wine, make for another good excuse to stay a while.

But apart from the inviting interior, and, in summer, the great terrace for people-watching, the good home-cooked food, and the affordable cocktails, it’s the people who make this place great. The servers and bartenders are always friendly and welcoming, ready with a smile on their faces.

Oh, and should you be searching for street art invaders while in Paris — there’s one sitting in the corner just next to the entrance!
