This café belongs to a family of cafés associated with Belleville Brûlerie, one of the best coffee roasters in Paris. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s exactly what I want from a Parisian café, and I wish there was one in every arrondissement. This particular one is in the 10th, in the outer reachers of the Belleville neighborhood.
It’s laid back and feels carefully-designed but lived in. Nothing is too precious — food, drinks, or décor — and the staff make you feel at home. The café is spacious inside, and their terrace approximately doubles the amount of seating. It’s popular and lively, but I’ve never had to wait for a table.
If you go in the morning, you can enjoy an excellent flat white or espresso along with breakfast — a tartine or seasonal baked good on the lighter side, and pain perdu or eggs with soldiers if you’re hungrier. They’re friendly to laptops (within reason), so I often get a couple hours of work done there for a change of scene from working at home.
They have a small but somehow perfect range of lunch options: often some kind of grain salad and a classic croque monsieur or madame. And for a late afternoon snack or goûter, they offer cookies baked in-house, and of course, another coffee.
Saturday afternoons in the summertime, they bring in a live jazz group, making their terrace the best place in town to sip a beer and enjoy a cheese plate. And they’re open well into the evening, with a drink and snack menu to match. Truly, if you just keep ordering, it would be easy to let a whole day slip by in such a casual and welcoming environment.
