Everyone knows that “the early bird catches the worm” but this especially true when it comes to the most popular spots in the most visited city on Earth. The Romano-byzantine architecture of the Basilique du Sacré Coeur is breath-taking, but large crowds can become very overwhelming at this must-see monument. We recommend reaching the site as early as possible – around 7:00 should do the trick – so you can enjoy the first rays of sunlight peeking over the dazzling white basilica and then watch the sun rise over the sleeping city.

Sacré Coeur owes its panoramic views to its location at the top of the Butte Montmartre, the highest point in Paris. The construction of this impressive monument began in 1875, in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War, but the basilica was not consecrated until 1919. Make sure you visit the inside of the basilica as the ceiling is decorated with France’s largest mosaic. But believe me, nothing beats having this jaw-dropping location all to yourself. It’s definitely worth setting your alarm extra early!
