“Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” Luckily, we weren’t late for dinner and we certainly weren’t disappointed when we followed the White Rabbit into the baroque wonderland that is the Caffè Stern.

In order to reach the restaurant, you must first walk through the Passage des Panoramas, one of the beautiful glass-roofed 18th-century galleries crisscrossing the area. Set on a corner in the former Stern engraver’s boutique, the Italian-style Gran Caffè welcomes you with stuffed wolves, rabbits, and even a lynx, on display in the storefront.

Inside the restaurant, the decor designed by Philippe Starck is equally exuberant. The chandeliers drip with jewels, baroque-style mirrors and twisted wooden columns add touches of eccentric, luxury, and unusual ornaments adorn the cozy and curious rooms. Servers wearing white shirts and white aprons scurry around, adding a lively buzz and Italian musical accent to the warm atmosphere of the place.

After taking in the sumptuous surroundings, it’s time to take in some scrumptious food! From your Spritz, through the antipasti and main dishes, to the final cantuccini, the Venetian cuisine prepared by Chef Denis Mattiuzzi is up to the eccentric, elegant design of the space. An evening at the Caffè Stern is an all-around high-class experience.
